Grammar, Logic, & Rhetoric

Classical Education

Classical Education, albeit the oldest, is the most proven form of education. It is systematic and integrates all subjects, helping students develop into knowledgeable, analytical, and articulate individuals. The hallmark of Classical Education is the Trivium: a three-stage system consisting of grammar, logic, and rhetoric stages. The skills developed in each stage are continually built upon from Kindergarten all through High School.

Grammar Stage

GRADES K-5

The first stage of the Trivium teaches the foundation needed for all other learning. Education during this stage focuses on the mastery of basic facts, such as the rules of phonics, spelling, and grammar as well as math, poetry memorization, recitation, Latin, and Greek.

Logic Stage

GRADES 6-8

By the sixth grade, children begin to think analytically and study formal logic. During this stage of the Trivium, students begin to examine the cause-and-effect relationships between different fields of knowledge and discover the connections that bind them together.

Rhetoric Stage

GRADES 9-12

The final stage of the Trivium educates students using the Socratic method of teaching—they learn formal rules of argument, refining both their writing and speaking skills to express their conclusions in clear, concise, and elegant language. Subjects are well integrated and are taught using textbooks and original texts. Students delve deeper into history, literature, science, mathematics, religion, and languages. Music and art appreciation are also required in this stage.

Religion

GRADES K-12

Knowledge of the Catholic faith and fidelity to the Magisterium is at the foundation of Providence Academy. In addition to daily religious instruction using Faith and Life and the Didache series, students attend daily Mass, weekly benediction, and monthly confession. Although religious study is required, non-Catholic students are welcome and accepted.

Additional Courses

GRADES K-12

Supplementary studies of Art, Music, and Physical Education are currently offered at Providence Academy for students seeking more opportunities in their interest(s).
